It’s Publishing, but not as we know it….
Dulcie Swanston says “When I wrote It’s Not Bloody Rocket Science I knew that “self-publishing” was not the right option for me because I needed a professional product, ISBN and proper distribution lines. However, the conventional publishing house model didn’t make commercial sense either. Sarah created a 3rd option – the set up of a publishing company where this book became its first output. It is fair to say that this would not have been at all possible without Sarah’s extensive expertise in publishing, printing, manufacture and distribution. She connected me with professional copywriters, editors, type-setters, printers and creative support. In addition, she is fabulously commercial and I now have two published books with worldwide distribution and a robust business model, with a third book on the way.”
“My mission is to make all the amazing research and science that is already out there really accessible, so that it is easy to understand and use – for everyone. I work on the principle that “People are People”. Every CEO started life as a child. Your most impressive boss had a first day at work where they knew nothing. The super-successful entrepreneurs you know had no clients and no product once upon a time. Wherever we end up, we all still human beings, navigating the same evolved brain wiring in ourselves and other people. All we can do is learn from each day – from our mistakes and the feedback that we receive from others and ourselves.”
“Releasing the book led to my being asked to present those ideas at conferences or round table events and I was invited to speak on the radio about the ideas. Next for me is to see if I can help young people who are still at school to learn about the things that can them fulfil their potential, without sacrificing personal happiness (With 5 teenagers, I want to get in there early!)”
Dulcie’s top tips:
My business evolved because I loved responding to the ideas from my clients and friends about what I could do next. Those people who used to tell me “you won’t succeed without a clear plan Dulcie” weren’t quite right. Instead when you read the book, I hope that you will sense that my advice on building your best life is based on the following 3 principles:
* Find something you love doing and become really good at it
* You have infinite capacity to do more and be more, so never stop listening and learning
* Replace “I can’t because…” in your life with “How could I…?”
